News: iPhone Unlocked

by on August 24, 2007

Late last night, it appears that the crew over at iPhoneSIMfree.com have found a way to unlock iPhones to be used with any SIM-based (GSM) carrier. In the US, this includes T-Mobile, Centennial, Immix Wireless, Cellular One/Dobson, or any of the other countless regional carriers. Engadget reports that the process is relatively painless and resistant to restores and updates. The software should be commercially available next week, and all functions work as expected except for Visual Voicemail and the YouTube application. Many expect this will help Apple sell even more iPhones to people who don’t like AT&T, while there’s already speculation that a software update might be created to undo this.

To quote TV’s Craig Ferguson, “It’s a great day for America.”
