Review: PodsPlus Aluminum V2 Case

by on July 21, 2006

iPod cases come in a variety of shapes and sizes and materials There are the ultra-slim platic cases, silicone “skins”, leather cases with flaps, and all sorts of others. The PodsPlus Aluminum V2 Case falls into the last category. The V2 Case takes the idea of the Matias iPod Armor, but makes it more accessible.

The $30 V2 Case is made of anodized aircraft-grade aluminum. The case features a built-in silicone Click Wheel protector. Because of this, it is available in five color combinations: black with red, blue, frosted clear, or black; or silver with black. There is also clear plastic in front of the screen, allowing you to completely operate the iPod while in the case.

The V2 Case’s design is much like many other aluminum cases—the front flips open with a hinge towards the bottom of the iPod and features a padded interior to absorb some shock and protect against scratches. The exterior of the case is rather plain, but does have little ridges on the side to make opening the case easier. On the back of the case are four nubs to prevent the case from sitting directly on whatever surface you lay it down on. There’s also a hole for attaching the belt clip and nub.

Unlike many aluminum cases, the belt clip is fully removable, as is the nub that it attaches to. If you’d rather have the case as slim as possible, simply unscrew the nub. Also included is a hand strap

The V2 Case does a pretty good job of protecting your iPod and feels sturdy while doing it. There are a few drawbacks, however. First, the Dock Connector opening is only large enough to use a Dock Connector cable (no bottom-mounted accessories). The opening still leaves quite a bit of the iPod exposed, especially on the easily-scratched silvery back. This is partially required to remove the iPod from the case. Finally, the case adds more bulk to the iPod, due to both the inner padding and outer shell of the case.

If you are looking for something to protect your iPod a bit more than some of the other options out there, the V2 Case is a fairly solid option. It’s also rather reasonably-priced.

The One-Sentence Verdict™

The PodsPlus Aluminum V2 Case is an interesting take on the aluminum case, and does not restrict access, unlike similar cases.

Pros: Solid protection, Click Wheel protection, well-padded, excellent build quality, removable belt clip and nub.

Cons: Dock Connector opening rather large, limited use of accessories, adds some bulk
