Snippet: Police Warn Against Use of Apple Maps in Australia ☇

Shared on December 10, 2012

Apparently on Apple’s Maps on iOS 6, Mildura, Victoria, Australia is in the wrong place, so local police are warning users to use another option (via MacRumors):

Local Police have been called to assist distressed motorists who have become stranded within the Murray-Sunset National Park after following directions on their Apple i-phone [sic]

Tests on the mapping system by police confirm the mapping systems lists Mildura in the middle of the Murray Sunset National Park, approximately 70km [about 43 miles] away from the actual location of Mildura.

Police are extremely concerned as there is no water supply within the Park and temperatures can reach as high as 46 degrees [Celsius—about 115° F], making this a potentially life threatening issue.

This is not good at all—can the weight of Apple be put on this issue sooner?

Update: Apple has fixed the issue, and it seems like the issue was traced to the official Australian Gazetteer.
